27 October 2005 - Narcisse Snake Dens, MB

After the Arizona trip we headed up to Canada. And once there I visited the famous Narcisse Snake Dens for the first time. Its a densite for thousands of garter snakes Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis. It was a very chilly October day so the hope wasnt set high to see snakes.

We had hope to see one of two snakes due to the late date, October 27, and it started off good with a cold female. Shortly after we had counted to over 20 snakes

In one den we found around 100 live snakes and a huge number of dead ones, picked to death by birds

Above the only one that showed defensive behaviour other then smell

Back on the parking lot we encountered this wild but friendly racoon
A face hard to resist! Lets hope she/he is still around in spring when we will return!
